Quivi giunti discendiamo per una settantina di metri sull'opposto versante e, sempre seguendo la rotabile, perveniamo al refuge de l'Etendard (mt. 2430 - 1h 15' dal parcheggio). 2° GIORNO: Dal rifugio attraversiamo il torrente su di una passerella metallica e, costeggiando il lac Bramant ed il lac Blanc lasciandoceli entrambi sulla sinistra, ci inoltriamo nel vallone che poco dopo attraversiamo nei pressi di una conca. Giunti sull'opposto versante ci lasciamo, sempre sulla sinistra,un bivacco e gadagnamo un'ampia insellatura. Perdendo qualche metro di dislivello e piegando a destra andiamo ad abbordare il ghiacciaio di St. Sorlin ad una quota approssimativa di 2700 metri. Per un tratto il percorso si mantiene pianeggiante ma ben presto siamo costretti a piegare a destra guadagnando quota in maniera alquanto decisa lungo il versante settentrionale del Pic de l'Etendard; l'itinerario è praticamente privo di crepacci e non ci costringe mai ad un percorso obbligato. Piegando in ultimo a destra tocchiamo la depressione del col de la Barbarate (mt. 3219) nei pressi del quale afferriamo la cresta che volge a nordovest. Mantenendoci prevalentemente sulla destra dello spartiacque procediamo su rocce rotte ed intermittenti chiazze di ottima neve sino a toccare i 3291 metri della Cime de la Barbarate (4h 30' dal rifuge
